NYT Opinion Piece on Kashmir

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/19/opinion/india-pakistan-kashmir-jammu.html A New York Times opinion piece by Harsh Shringla talks about the Indian armies invasion of Kashmir. He justifies the invasion through a utilitarian approach. He cites the lack of economic success, regressive laws, and terrorist connections in Kashmir. He believes that an enforced Indian rule over Kashmir would be better for its citizens, therefore it is permissible for India to invade Pakistan. He says "The changes introduced by India have challenged entrenched interests who benefited from the old system at a cost to the people.". He calls it a "introduced change", however it is a military invasion (1). USA today reports the opposite, that " Kashmir is India’s only Muslim-majority state and most people there oppose Indian rule" and " Rebels have been fighting Indian control for decades, and most Kashmiris support the rebels' demand that all of Kashmir be united under Pa...

Journalist searched at Border

A journalist was headed back home through the Austin airport after doing some reporting in Mexico. He went through border control and was met by an officer. This officer first asked basic questions at first such as "How long were you there" "What were you doing" and so on. Then, he started to inquire about the substance of the story he was working on. This should be non of his business. The nature of someones journalistic work in a foreign country has nothing to do with proof that he's an American citizen. After declining to give information on the story he worked on, officer Blowhard took him to secondary screening for more interrogation. The journalist points out how border control has drastically changed under republican rule. They now see themselves as a counter terrorism strike force. The journalist asked if was being taped earlier, which they denied, but it turns out another officer had "reviewed the tape" and deemed he was ripe for interrogation...

Bolsonaro's Rainforest Army

https://www.npr.org/2019/08/23/753719345/brazilian-president-bolsonaro-may-send-army-to-combat-amazon-forest-fires NPR reports on the Bolsonaro administration sending an army to the rainforest. The article leads you to believe that Bolsonaro is changing his agenda due global backlash and mounting pressure. They don't really discuss much else but the backlash for possible reasons he's sending an army, so if you only read this article about it and asked "why is he sending an army?", you most likely will think its because Boris Johnson was upset about Bolsonaro or something along those lines. They take his gesture seemingly at face value as well. They quote a person saying the "prestige and credibility" of Brazil is being ruined from this. They talk about a two step elbow from president Macron to Bolsonaro by him saying he was tricked by Bolsonaro, and because of this is pulling out of a possible trade deal. All this implies there may be a is a new found pre...
